Recognizing suicide risk is only the beginning. For behavioral health professionals, the greater challenge is determining what happens next. Many suicide prevention programs are designed for general audiences, emphasizing awareness, warning signs, and referral to professional services. While these skills are essential, clinicians need additional training to assess, treat, and manage suicide risk within an ongoing therapeutic relationship. This six-credit-hour course was developed specifically for behavioral health professionals who are responsible for making those clinical decisions. Participants will learn to conduct structured suicide risk assessments, evaluate suicidal ideation, intent, planning, and access to lethal means, and develop individualized clinical risk formulations. The course examines evidence-based interventions, collaborative safety planning, outpatient treatment, hospitalization considerations, and continuity of care following a suicidal crisis. Additional topics include managing suicide risk in telehealth settings, documentation and clinical liability, consultation, confidentiality, veteran suicide prevention, and working with individuals who present with complex or elevated risk. Through realistic case studies, practical exercises, and clinical decision-making scenarios, participants will develop skills they can apply directly to their work with clients experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Rather than simply teaching clinicians when to refer someone for help, this course focuses on what to do when you are the professional providing that help.
